Many things about the American electoral system but the few standouts are:
- that the House of Representatives have appointed the president in the past
- that the 12th Amendment requires the Electoral College to vote separately for president and vice-president
- that prior to the 12th Amendment rival presidential candidates have found themselves in office together as president and vice-president
