Gyllenhaal's performance combines his natural charisma with a restrained, seething rage and the coldness of someone substituting CBT for empathy ---- LA looks beautiful in a film filled with fantastic photography. Later sequences create a subversion homage to the cop film with chases and shoot outs where the protagonists have no stake in the frenetic action except to witness it. ---- Bloom's Mustang is as fetishised as any street racing film but it equally impotent. The neon of the dash and the gear is visually beautiful. ---- There is a nice visual touch in that Bloom never bothers to have the bracelet of his stolen watch adjust so it hangs badly off his wrist throughout the film. Acting as a trophy for the character and a constant point of alarm for the audience, highlighting the danger of the character.
